Romanian
Romanian is
spoken by 24 million native speakers, and by 4 million second-language
speakers. It is an official language in Romania and Moldova, and
it is also spoken in Serbia, Hungary, and Ukraine.
Romanian is
also spoken in Canada, the United States (primarily Chicago), Spain,
Italy, France, Israel, and Australia, where most of the Romanian
immigrants are located.
Of the Romance
languages, Romanian is most similar to Italian. The lexical similarity
with Italian is estimated at 77%, followed by French with 75%, Sardinian
with 74%, Catalan with 73%, and Spanish with 71%.
It is estimated
that more than 30% of words in Romanian are of French and Italian
origin, while around 80% are of Latin origin. Romanian also includes
many words of Slavic and Turkish origin.
