About Portuguese

Portuguese is one of the major Romance languages, and one of the most spoken languages in the world. It is spoken by 210 native speakers, and by more than 100 million other language speakers. It is the seventh most spoken language in the world and second most spoken in SouthAmerica by native speakers. Portuguese is an official language in seven countries, including Brazil, Portugal, Angola, Mozambique, and Guinea Bissau, and co-official in Macau and East Timor.

In Europe, Portuguese is spoken mainly in Portugal. Italian is also spoken in Andorra and Luxembourg.

In the Americas, Portuguese is one of the most widely spoken language by native speakers, with more than 200 million in Brazil. Portuguese is also spoken in the northern part of Paraguay, and in Eastern U.S., by the large number of Brazilian immigrants, who are mainly located in Boston.

In Africa, Portuguese is spoken in Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Sao Tome and Principe, and Angola.

In Asia, Portuguese is co-official in Macau (China) and East Timor, and is spoken in Goa (India).

European Portuguese is very close to Brazilian Portuguese; they differ mainly in the usage of words and type of accents.
