ABOUT BePolyglot

BePolyglot is dedicated to creating multilingual speakers in an ever increasingly connected world. It does so by taking advantage of the myriad of similarities that exist between the five major Romance languages and by connecting the student to anytime and anywhere online access to native speakers.

BePolyglot targets the challenge and opportunity that lies in learning similar languages, by providing a systematic method for effective learning. It shows how the five languages interact, what is similar and different, and derives rules and insights into how to avoid mixing words and grammar structures.

BePolyglot is a for-profit social enterprise. It is a social venture in the sense that it builds on the language capabilities of native speakers in developing countries and it empowers them to invest their earnings for the benefit of their community. These speakers earn the exact amount that the student pays for the online native speaker access; these speakers, in turn, give back to their community by investing part of their earnings in community initiatives.

BePolyglot ensures its sustainability through the initial membership fee, which generates just enough profit to provide complementary comparative language material and to cover its operational expenses.

Araceli Jimenez is a housewife who lives with her 5-year-old son and her husband in the village of Atoyac in Guerrero, Mexico. The state of Guerrero is one of the poorest states in Mexico, with one third of the population living in extreme poverty and with violence as a recurrent theme. Araceli provides immediate online Spanish language support to students from all over the world who need last-minute Spanish help, either with their Spanish class homework or their conversation skills. With what she earns, Araceli is able to invest in an English language school in her community that charges a modest fee that many children would otherwise not be able to pay.
